Shipping software for small sellers earns its keep in two places: the rate you pay per label, and the hour a week you stop spending in carrier websites. Three programs in our partner directory cover the physical side of a small ecommerce operation — getting orders out, making product without inventory risk, and not losing the customer when you are out of stock.
Disclosure: the tool links below are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Nobody paid for a place on this page or for a kinder write-up.
Shippo — labels and tracking
Multi-carrier label buying at discounted rates, with tracking, returns and address validation, and integrations with the usual storefronts.
- Good fit: you ship your own orders from Shopify, eBay, Etsy, Walmart or your own site.
- Skip it if: everything you sell is FBA and Amazon handles every shipment.
Tapstitch — print on demand
Custom apparel and accessories made per order, so a product line can be tested without a pallet arriving first. Sampling, small batches and production in one place.
- Good fit: merch, a brand extension, or testing designs before committing to a run.
- Skip it if: your margins depend on bulk manufacturing cost — per-unit POD pricing will not get there.
Notify Me! — back-in-stock alerts
A sold-out product page is a leak. Back-in-stock alerts capture the email or SMS and bring the buyer back the day inventory lands, which is the cheapest demand you will ever pay for.
- Good fit: you sell on your own storefront and stock out regularly.
- Skip it if: you never run out, or you sell only inside Amazon’s own pages.
The cash point: shipping and stockouts are working-capital problems dressed up as software problems. A cheaper label improves margin by a point or two; running out of your best seller for three weeks costs far more. Tools help at the margins — the inventory math in The Amazon Seller’s Pocket Guide is what decides the quarter.
Do not forget the fee side
Fulfillment savings are easy to overestimate when FBA fees and storage are still coming off the top. Our FBA fee breakdown shows where the money actually goes, and Why Not to Sell on Amazon makes the case for keeping some of your volume on channels you control.
The rest of the stack — CRM, call tracking, chat and phone — is listed in the partner directory.
What discounted labels are really worth
Run the arithmetic before switching: multiply your monthly package count by the per-label saving, then subtract any platform fee. Two hundred packages a month at $1.20 saved is $240 — real money. Twenty packages a month is $24, which is not worth a migration. The bigger win for most small sellers is the hour a week they stop spending copying addresses between carrier websites, plus fewer address failures.
Dimensional weight is the silent killer
Carriers bill on the greater of actual and dimensional weight, so box size can cost more than product weight. Before you order packaging, price the same product in two box sizes across two carriers. On Amazon the equivalent trap is the size tier: one extra inch can move a product into the next FBA band and take more margin than any label discount will ever return.
Questions people ask
Should I use FBA or ship myself?
FBA buys Prime placement and takes fees and control; self-fulfillment keeps margin and costs time. Many sellers run both — FBA on Amazon, their own labels for direct orders.
Is print-on-demand profitable?
It removes inventory risk rather than raising margin. Per-unit costs are high, so it works best for testing designs, merch and brand extensions, not for competing on price.
Do back-in-stock alerts actually recover sales?
They recover a share of demand you have already paid to attract, which is why the economics are good. They cannot help if you are never out of stock, or if you only sell inside Amazon.

Shippo Review: Multi-Carrier Shipping Software
Sep 04, 2026[…] Rule of thumb: if a person prints your labels and volume is modest or lumpy, Shippo. If shipping is a station in a small warehouse with staff and rules, look hard at ShipStation. Both of them beat buying postage by hand. We cover the wider category, including sourcing and print-on-demand, in our round-up of shipping and fulfillment tools for small sellers. […]
