Multi-carrier shipping software for small business exists to solve one dull, expensive problem: you are buying postage one label at a time, at whatever rate the first carrier screen shows you, and you have no idea whether the other three carriers would have been cheaper. Shippo is the tool most small sellers reach for first, and it is the one we list under shipping in our Marketing Partners directory. Here is an honest look at what it does, who it suits, and who should not bother.

The problem it solves
If Amazon FBA moves everything you sell, shipping is Amazon’s problem. The moment you sell anywhere else — Shopify, eBay, Etsy, a wholesale order, your own site — it becomes yours. And it gets ugly in three ways at once.
- Rate blindness. The same 2 lb parcel can vary by several dollars between USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL depending on zone and dimensions. Guessing costs you margin on every order.
- Retail pricing. A one-person shop has no volume to negotiate with. Walking into the post office means paying close to counter rates.
- Time. Copying addresses, buying postage, printing, then pasting tracking numbers back into three storefronts is an hour a day you are not spending on listings.
Shipping software fixes all three by pooling your volume with everyone else’s, pulling rates from several carriers into one screen, and syncing orders and tracking back to your channels automatically.
What Shippo actually does
Shippo is a multi-carrier shipping platform with two faces: a web dashboard for people who just want to print labels, and a REST API for developers who want shipping inside their own app.
- Rate comparison. USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL Express and dozens of regional and international carriers, side by side, at pre-negotiated discount rates you would not get on your own.
- Batch labels. Import the day’s orders, apply a default package size, buy and print in one pass instead of one at a time.
- Tracking and notifications. Tracking numbers push back to the store, and customers can get branded tracking pages and email updates on paid plans.
- Returns. Prepaid return labels you can include or send on request.
- Integrations. Shopify, Amazon, eBay, Etsy, BigCommerce, WooCommerce and more, plus a well-documented API in most common languages.
What it costs
Shippo publishes its pricing, which we appreciate. As of this writing there is a free tier that charges a small per-label fee (roughly five to seven cents a label after a monthly allowance of free labels), and a paid Professional plan starting around $19 per month that removes the per-label fee and scales up in price with label volume. Independent write-ups quote figures in that same range, though the exact tiers move. Carrier postage is separate and always will be. Check the current pricing page before you budget — do not budget off this article.
The practical read: at low volume the free plan costs you almost nothing, and the carrier discount alone usually pays for the subscription once you are shipping a few hundred parcels a month.
Who it fits
- Sellers who fulfil their own orders from a spare room, a garage or a small unit, especially across more than one sales channel.
- Low and irregular volume. The pay-as-you-go tier means a slow month costs you nothing in subscription fees, which subscription-only competitors cannot match.
- Developers. If you are building shipping into your own software, Shippo’s API is consistently rated one of the cleaner ones in the category.
- Anyone still buying postage at the counter. The discount is the whole argument.
Who should skip it
Our directory line on Shippo is blunt: skip it if everything you sell is FBA and Amazon moves all of it. You would be paying for a problem you do not have. Beyond that:
- You need heavy automation. Reviewers consistently describe Shippo’s feature surface as deliberately smaller than ShipStation’s. If you want deep rules engines — branch on weight, destination, SKU, customer tag — you will hit the ceiling.
- Returns are core to your business. Shippo has a returns product, but independent reviews in 2026 still call it a starting point rather than a full returns platform. If returns run above 15% of orders, as they often do in apparel, look at a dedicated returns tool.
- You need hand-holding. Support responsiveness is the most common complaint in reviews. If shipping stops, you want to be able to fix it yourself.
- You have your own negotiated carrier contracts. At that volume the pooled discount stops being the selling point.
Shippo vs ShipStation
These two get compared constantly, and the honest answer is that they are aimed at different stages rather than at each other.
- Pricing shape. Shippo has a genuine free, pay-per-label tier. ShipStation is subscription-only with a free trial. Under a couple of hundred orders a month, Shippo is usually cheaper; the gap narrows as volume climbs.
- Automation. ShipStation wins on automation rules, reporting depth and warehouse-style workflows. That is what you are paying the subscription for.
- Simplicity and API. Shippo is easier to learn and easier to build on. Small teams get to their first label faster.
Rule of thumb: if a person prints your labels and volume is modest or lumpy, Shippo. If shipping is a station in a small warehouse with staff and rules, look hard at ShipStation. Both of them beat buying postage by hand. We cover the wider category, including sourcing and print-on-demand, in our round-up of shipping and fulfillment tools for small sellers.
Where shipping fits in the bigger picture
Shipping software saves cents per parcel, and cents per parcel matter — but only after the product itself works. If your unit economics are thin before postage, no label discount rescues them. That is the argument we make at length in Why Not to Sell on Amazon, and the fee arithmetic is laid out in The Amazon Seller’s Pocket Guide. If a term in this post is unfamiliar, the seller terms glossary is the fastest fix.
FAQ
Is Shippo free?
There is a free tier. You pay a small per-label fee on it rather than a monthly subscription, and you still pay carrier postage on top. Paid plans start around $19 per month and remove the per-label fee. Confirm current numbers on Shippo’s pricing page.
Does Shippo work with Amazon orders?
Yes, it integrates with Amazon alongside Shopify, eBay, Etsy and others — but if Amazon fulfils the order through FBA there is no label for you to buy, so the value is in your merchant-fulfilled and off-Amazon orders.
Do the carrier discounts really save money?
For a small shipper with no negotiated contracts, yes — that is the main reason to use a platform like this at all. How much depends entirely on your parcel weights, dimensions and zones, so price two or three of your actual typical parcels before you commit.
Shippo sits in the shipping section of the full partner directory, next to the sourcing and print-on-demand tools it pairs with.
